That time I illustrated a Psalm
I designed this after reading Yehuda Halevi’s 11th century homoerotic poem based on Psalm 17:15. Influenced by abstract theosophical works of Hilma af Klimt and Agnes Peyton, the illustration intentionally overwhelms and disorients upon first glance, evading any immediate intelligibility.

Psalm 17:15
trans. Robert Alter
“As for me, in justice, I behold your face, I take my fill, wide awake, of Your image.”
Yehuda Halevi
trans. Rabbi Greenvald and Alicia Fowler
Awake my lover boy from your slumber
when I awake I will fill myself with your image
if in a dream you behold a man kissing your lips
I will reveal the meanings of your fantasy
